The research on the coupling relationship between economic systems and water resources systems has always been a hot topic in the academic field. Due to the characteristics of its own economy and water resources environment, it is particularly necessary to study the coupling mechanism between the economic system and the water resources system in coastal areas. Based on the coupling system perspective, this paper constructs the coupling mechanism model of the economic system and the water resources system. On this basis, the author obtains the following conclusions through the research on Jiangsu coastal areas: (1) There is a complex coupling mechanism between the economic system and the water resources system. When the operation of the two systems conflicts, the water resources system will send a response signal to the economic system. (2) The coupling state between the economic system and the water resource system in Jiangsu coastal area showed a better coordinated situation from 2000 to 2011. From 2012 to 2014, the coupling between the economic system and the water resources system weakened and was in a state of basic coordination. Therefore, the industrial structure of this region needs to be adjusted and the resource-friendly economic model needs to be established.
