Abstract

Özkaynak, Ö.-H. and İçemer, G.-T., 2024. The importance of seagrasses in mitigating the impacts of climate change: A bibliometric analysis. In: Phillips, M.R.; Al-Naemi, S., and Duarte, C.M. (eds.), Coastlines under Global Change: Proceedings from the International Coastal Symposium (ICS) 2024 (Doha, Qatar). Journal of Coastal Research, Special Issue No. 113, pp. 921-925. Charlotte (North Carolina), ISSN 0749-0208.

In recent years, much research has been carried out to reduce the impact of increasing climate change. In this study, studies on the contribution of seagrasses in marine ecosystems to the natural mitigation of climate change with their carbon sequestration feature were evaluated by bibliometric analysis. The carbon sequestration property of seagrass meadows is defined as blue carbon. In this study, studies containing the words seagrass and blue carbon were taken from the WOS database and analyzed using VOSwiever and Microsoft Excel programs. It has been observed that a total of 555 studies have been conducted on this subject since 2011. It has been determined that the organization that publishes the most on this subject is ELSEVIER (178 publications), with a rate of 32%. As a result of this study, it was determined that there is a need for more detailed and comprehensive research on the impact of seagrass meadows on mitigating climate change, as well as increasing marine protected areas by states to 30% and encouraging these practices.
