Abstract

A coastal settlement located in the European part of Turkey, Tekirdağ is an important city thanks to its microclimate and soil structure. However, because of an irregular pattern of development, the amount of green area that could provide ecological benefits to the city and its environments has drastically decreased. To determine the change in the amount of green area, we analyzed the plant index values in satellite images belonging to different Landsat TM satellite images from the years 1987, 2002, 2006, and 2009 and classified them by their normalized difference vegetation indexes. Based on this classification, healthy vegetation structure increased by 3.0% between 1987 and 2009, and other areas (water, agriculture, settlement, and unvalued) decreased at the rate of 3.0%.
