Waikeri (Manu Bay), Waikato, Aotearoa New Zealand. This iconic surfing resource is a Surf Break of National Significance with value associated to wave quality, consistency, the uniqueness ofthe environment, ease of access and inclusivity for surfers of all ages and abilities. In the late 1960s, with sustainable coastal management some years from conception, the contemporary boat ramp and breakwater at Manu Bay were established. The structures interrupt the natural fan-shape of the andesitic boulder field. During construction, sub and intertidal substrates were excavated creating a ∼50 m wide gap in the pre-construction morphology. A large scour hole prevails on the seaward side of the breakwater. The combination of scour hole, breakwater and excavated area has resulted in the loss of an estimated c.200 m of the surf break, an increase in offshore-directed currents and the inhibition of longshore transport, leading to downstream erosion.
