We studied the seasonal patterns of 3 community attributes (breeding site index, richness, and diversity) of groundwater mosquito immatures and their associations with meso- and microhabitat factors in the Paraná Lower Delta, Argentina, from December 2009 to November 2010. Monthly collections at 4 sites yielded 2,313 mosquito immatures, belonging to 19 species assigned to 6 genera. Immatures developed in a wide range of microenvironmental conditions (water temperature 4.0–30.2°C, pH 5.4–9.1, electrical conductivity 0.02–6.33 mS/cm, and dissolved oxygen 0–235.6%), and their occurrence was significantly associated with lower water temperature and dissolved oxygen values. Most frequently captured species were Culex dolosus s.l. (58.6%), Aedes crinifer (22.9%), and Cx. intrincatus (19.0%). Breeding site index was highest in winter (0.76) and lowest in spring (0.54). Species richness and diversity varied significantly among seasons (peaking in summer), land uses, and habitat types.

A standardized larval dipping method was used to determine the infestation rates of Culex and other species of mosquitoes in stagnant water at 20 residential areas. This study also examined the associations between Culex distribution and various habitat characteristics across all states in Malaysia. Identification of 7,848 specimens yielded 6 species dominated by Culex quinquefasciatus (82.74%), followed by Cx. vishui (14.39%), Cx. gelidus (2.70%), Lutzia fuscanus (0.11%), Armigeres subalbatus (0.05%), and Anopheles separatus (0.01%). The Culex larvae occurred in stagnant water with pH ranging from 6.4 to 8.2; conductivity, 139.7 to 6635.2 µs/cm; salinity, 0.07 to 3.64 ppt; total dissolved solids, 0.09 to 4.27g/liter; and dissolved oxygen, 5.11 to 8.11 mg/liter. The mean number of Culex larvae was positively correlated with pH, conductivity, salinity, and total dissolved solids. In contrast, the elevation and dissolved oxygen were found negatively correlated with mean number of Culex larvae. This study documented baseline information on the habitat characteristics of Culex species for the 1st time at different residential areas in Malaysia. The findings of this study will be a timely reminder to local authorities that effective control measures should be monitored regularly in order to reduce the nuisance of these mosquitoes and the risks of disease transmission.

The Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a threat that must not be neglected, as the consequences of RVFV are dramatic, both for human and animal health. This virus is a zoonotic virus that already has demonstrated a real capacity for re-emerging after long periods of silence, as observed in Barkedji (Senegal, West Africa) in 2002. In this article we present the 2nd emergence in Barkedji after the 1st manifestation in 1993, and for the 1st time the circulation of RVFV during 2 consecutive years among mosquito populations in Senegal. As part of the entomological surveillance program undertaken since 1990 to detect circulation of the RVFV in Barkedji, 108,336 mosquitoes belonging to 34 species and 5 genera were collected in 2002–2003. Aedes vexans and Culex poicilipes, previously known to be vectors of RVFV in Senegal, comprised 88.7% of the total collection. In 2002, Ae. vexans was the most abundant mosquito, followed by Cx. poicilipes; the opposite situation was observed in 2003. In 2002, 29 and 10 RVFV isolates were obtained from Cx. poicilipes (minimum infection rate [MIR]  =  0.13%) and Ae. vexans (MIR  =  0.02%) pools, respectively and the MIR for the 2 species were significantly different (χ²  =  34.65; df  =  1, P < 0.001). In 2003, 7 RVFV strains were isolated from Cx. poicilipes (3, MIR  =  0.03), Mansonia africana (2, MIR  =  0.08), Ae. fowleri (1), and Ma. uniformis (1, MIR  =  0.05). The 3 latter species were found to be associated with RVFV for the 1st time in Senegal. A significant decrease in MIR was observed from 2002 to 2003 (χ²  =  6.28; df  =  1, P  =  0.01) for Cx. poicilipes, the only species involved in the transmission during the 2 sampling years.

Sand flies are important vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis, especially along coastal towns of northwestern Libya where an estimated 20,000 cases have occurred from 2004 to 2009. Host-seeking traps are an important tool for sampling sand fly populations and surveying the incidence of Leishmania major and L. tropica within a given population. We evaluated the capture efficiency of CO₂-baited BG-Sentinel, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) light, CDC ultraviolet light, and nonbaited CO₂ CDC light traps in 3 coastal townships during June, August, September, and November 2010. A total of 3,248 sand flies, representing 8 species from 2 genera, were collected; most sand flies were identified as either Phlebotomus papatasi or P. longicuspis. Three of the traps captured significantly more sand flies compared to the BG-Sentinel baited with CO₂ (P < 0.001). Three of 456 DNA pools extracted from sand flies were positive for Leishmania DNA, indicating a minimum estimated infection rate of 0.83% and 0.47% for P. papatasi and P. longicuspis, respectively.

Twelve reported mosquito attractants, alone or in combination, and 3 different types of traps were evaluated under field conditions for their attractiveness to host-seeking and oviposition-seeking female Aedes japonicus japonicus and associated woodland species in Windsor, CT, in 2010 and 2011. This study highlights the effectiveness of combining CO₂ with the TrapTech® Mosquito Lure in a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) miniature light trap for collection of Ae. j. japonicus and associated woodland mammalian-feeding mosquitoes. The TrapTech Mosquito Lure is a proprietary blend of Bedoukian Research, Inc. It contained 250 mg of R-1-octen-3-ol and 1900 mg of ammonium bicarbonate, which were slowly released from a plastic disperser. On average, 567 Ae. j. japonicus individuals were collected per trap per night in the CDC miniature light traps baited with CO₂ plus TrapTech Mosquito Lure. The numbers collected in this trap were 28 times and 100 times greater than the numbers of Ae. j. japonicus collected in the CDC miniature light trap baited only with CO₂ and the gravid trap baited with hay infusion, 2 commonly used traps to assess abundance of Ae. j. japonicus. The average catches of other mammalian-biting species, Ae. cinereus, Ae. triseriatus, Ae. trivittatus, Ae. vexans, Anopheles punctipennis, An. quadrimaculatus, Coquillettidia perturbans, and Culex salinarius, were all significantly greater in the CDC miniature light trap baited with CO₂ plus TrapTech Mosquito Lure than in traps with CO₂ alone, but their average numbers were not as large as were those of Ae. j. japonicus. These data demonstrate that the TrapTech Mosquito Lure used in combination with CO₂ in a CDC miniature light trap has potential to be a versatile and simple surveillance method for Ae. j. japonicus and other species.

Thymus magnus, an endemic species, is found in the Republic of Korea. The volatile compounds extracted by SPME from T. magnus were investigated for their chemical composition and electrophysiological response against the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus. The volatile compounds of T. magnus as determined by gas chromatography mass spectrometry were γ-terpinene (33.0%), thymol (29.9%), β-bisabolene (8.9%), ρ-cymene (8.3%), α-terpinene (5.0%), myrcene (4.7%), β-caryophyllene (4.0%), α-thujene (2.7%), camphene (1.3%), carvacrol (1.2%), and α-pinene (1.1%). Among these candidates, thymol exhibited complete (100%) repellent activity against female Ae. albopictus, an effect that was confirmed through evaluating the electrophysiological response on the antenna of Ae. albopictus. The effectiveness of a binary 1∶2 mixture of thymol and vanillin (0.05∶0.1 µl per cm²) was found to be significantly more effective than thymol alone for a period of 120 min. In addition, thymol, α-terpinene, and carvacrol showed high larvicidal activity against on the third-stage larvae with LC₅₀ values of 0.9 µl per 100 ml.

The compound 1-octen-3-ol is a strong attractant for some mosquito species. Based on chemical structure, this may be due to a terminal site of unsaturation or high electron density, a structural capability for hydrogen bonding, e.g., -OH, -NH₂, NHR, NR₂, etc., a saturated hydrocarbon chain of a certain minimum length, and a certain relative distance between the region of high electron density and the alcohol (or other hydrogen-bonding) functional group. Based on this hypothesis, 4 novel alkynol (triple-bonded) analogs were synthesized and evaluated alone or in combination with acetone and dimethyl disulfide, and with and without carbon dioxide in Mosquito Magnet-X© suction traps. Attraction of laboratory-reared adult Aedes albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus to these analogs and combinations was compared to 1-octen-3-ol as a standard in semi–field trials. For both species none of the alkynols, with and without carbon dioxide or acetone and dimethyl disulfide, were significantly different from 1-octen-3-ol. The compounds 2-octyn-4-ol and 2-nonyn-4-ol alone and with carbon dioxide suppressed Cx. quinquefasciatus collections. An additional 6 alkenol (double-bonded) analogs were tested in mixtures with 3-n-propylphenol and 4-methylphenol in a ratio of 4∶1∶8, respectively. Using the same trapping methods, Cx. quinquefasciatus catches containing 3-decen-1-ol were increased nearly 3-fold when combined with carbon dioxide. Aedes albopictus collections in traps with the 3-decen-1-ol/phenol mixture and carbon dioxide were significantly greater than similar traps with 1-octen-3-ol. Traps baited with the phenol blends that incorporated (Z)-3-nonen-1-ol, (Z)-8-nonen-3-ol, or 1-octen-3-ol were considerably suppressed in the presence of carbon dioxide.

We investigated the efficacy, fate, and potential for direct effects on salmonids of 4 common mosquito larvicides (Mosquito Dunks® and Bits® (AI: Bacillis thuringiensis var. israelensis, [Bti]), VectoLex® WSP (AI: Bacillus sphaericus [Bs], VectoLex CG [AI: Bs], and Altosid® Briquets [AI: s-methoprene]) in Seattle, WA, during 3 summers. During efficacy trials in 2006, all treatments resulted in a rapid reduction in number of mosquito pupae (Mosquito Dunks and Bits and VectoLex WSP) or emergence success (Altosid Briquets). VectoLex CG was chosen for city-wide application in 2007 and 2008. The average counts of pupae within round-top basins remained significantly below the control average for 11 wk in 2007, whereas efficacy in grated-top basins was short-lived. In 2008 the average counts of pupae within grated-top basins remained significantly below the control average for 10 wk. Altosid XR was also effective in reducing adult emergence within grated basins in 2008. In 2007 and 2008, frequent precipitation events made the evaluation of efficacy difficult due to reductions in pupae across control and treated basins. Four separate analyses of VectoLex products revealed that the product was a combination of Bs and Bti. Both Bs and Bti were detected in 3 urban creeks connected to treated basins in 2007 and 2008. Laboratory toxicity test results suggest that concentrations of Bs and Bti detected in each of the watersheds pose little direct hazard to juvenile salmonids.

In order to better understand the role a barrier application plays in an integrated mosquito management program, we applied a bifenthrin barrier application to a large golf course community and evaluated the mosquito population, service requests, and money spent for control from our barrier site as well as a site that was only treated via ground ultra-low–volume (ULV) application or that was left as a control site. Both the barrier application (t  =  2.63, df  =  126, P  =  0.0147) and the ground ULV application (t  =  2.49, df  =  126, P  =  0.0054) significantly reduced mosquito populations compared to the control, but means within treatments did not differ from each other. Mosquito populations in Centers for Disease Control and Prevention traps were reduced by 84% by barrier application and by 52% by ground ULV application at 6 wk posttreatment compared with untreated control. The 2 major species collected during the evaluation period were Anopheles crucians (81%) and Aedes atlanticus (13%). Anopheles crucians was significantly reduced compared with controls for the barrier application (t  =  1.55, df  =  126, P  =  0.003) and ground ULV application (t  =  1.85, df  =  126, P  =  0.052). Aedes atlanticus was significantly reduced by the barrier application (t  =  1.54, df  =  128, P  =  0.002) but not by ground ULV application (P  =  0.083). Overall the barrier application resulted in a significant decrease (χ²  =  35.4, df  =  1, P < 0.0001) in the number of service requests and ground ULV application (χ²  =  5.3, df  =  1, P  =  0.02) compared to the site that was only treated with ground ULV application. The barrier application saved an estimated $2,700. Thus, large-scale barrier applications are an appropriate tool for control of floodwater mosquito populations.

Using contingent valuation we estimated the perceived value of an area-wide integrated pest management program for the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, implemented in Monmouth and Mercer counties, NJ. We estimated residents' maximum willingness-to-pay and perceived monetary benefits (willingness-to-pay excluding residents who protested all types of payments) and payment modality through a telephone survey of 51 randomly selected households. The mean (± SE) perceived monetary benefits for an enhanced mosquito abatement program was $9.54 ± 2.90 per capita per year. Most respondents would have been willing to pay through taxes (35%) or charitable donations (6%) starting then, or through one of these approaches in the future (43%), whereas 16% were completely unwilling to pay any additional costs whatsoever. We projected that the perceived monetary benefits to the counties' 1.01 million residents for an enhanced mosquito control program would be $9.61 million annually. Thus, collectively residents perceived monetary benefits of 3.67 times the combined 2008 annual operating costs of the counties' existing mosquito control programs of $2.61 million.

A checklist of 63 species of mosquitoes endemic in New Jersey is presented. Although Aedes albopictus was included in the previous checklist, the species has dramatically increased its geographic range and population numbers in recent years, and it is now prevalent in 19 of New Jersey's 21 counties. The invasive Aedes japonicus japonicus is also now widespread throughout the state and is an addition to the previous checklist. Culex erraticus, an endemic species with a previous distribution primarily in the southern portion of the state, has also expanded its range significantly in New Jersey in recent years and is now detected state-wide. Mosquito control personnel periodically discover localized populations of Ae. aegypti, but the species fails to overwinter successfully in New Jersey and is not included on the checklist.

A faunal survey of mosquitoes was conducted in 2008, 2009, and 2010 at various trapping locations throughout the city of San Antonio, TX. A total of 22,739 mosquitoes representing 41 species in 8 genera were collected during this study. The most prevalent mosquito species collected were Aedes vexans (25%), Ae. sollicitans (14%), Culex tarsalis (13.5%), and Cx. erraticus (11%). Four mosquito species (Ae. bimaculatus, Anopheles freeborni, Cx. declarator, and Psorophora horrida) not previously recorded in this area were collected, whereas several species historically occurring in San Antonio were not collected during this survey.

We report the mosquito species and their distribution records for Ubin Island, Singapore, based on our field collections in February 2010, routine adult and larval surveys from 1993 to 2009 by Singapore operational officers, and accessioned specimens deposited in the Environmental Health Institute, Singapore, and the US National Museum of Natural History, Washington, DC. A total of 25 species and 6 unidentified species belonging to 9 genera (Aedes, Anopheles, Armigeres, Coquillettidia, Culex, Lutzia, Mansonia, Uranotaenia, and Verrallina) were identified and recorded from Ubin Island, based on specimens collected from 1993 to 2010.

We report the collection of Aedes aegypti, Culex quinquefasciatus, Cx. interrogator, Cx. thriambus, Cx. coronator, and Cx. salinarius larvae from storm sewers within an endemic area for dengue transmission in Merida, Mexico, during the rainy season of 2011. This is the first record of the dengue vector Ae. aegypti breeding in storm sewers in the southeast of Mexico.

Chironomid midges are ubiquitous and ecologically important aquatic insects. However, some species can become pests when they occur in extremely high numbers, particularly those that colonize man-made habitats. Chironomus calligraphus is a Neotropical, pan-American species that has recently been found in the Nearctic region. This paper represents the 1st reported occurrence of C. calligraphus in Georgia. Extensive larval populations were found in the leaf sheaths and root masses of cattails and in the firm sandy substrates of a wastewater lake at an industrial site in coastal Georgia. Chironomus calligraphus was causing a significant economic impact at this site.

The efficacy of 3 rodent feed-through insecticides (novaluron, pyriproxyfen, and ivermectin) was determined against larvae of the sand flies Phlebotomus duboscqi and P. papatasi using Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) and Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) as laboratory models. For each insecticide, there were no significant differences between the longevity or percentage survival of sand fly larvae that had been fed feces of treated rodents for each sand fly or rodent species pairing. The results of this study suggest that larvae of P. duboscqi and P. papatasi are equally susceptible to the concentrations of the rodent feed-through insecticides tested in this study and that these insecticides are pharmacologically compatible with different rodent/sand fly interactions.

A Culex quinquefasciatus colony was established from surviving late instars and pupae from a semifield microcosm test with Natular® XRG (a granular formulation containing 2.5% spinosad) applied at 14.2 kg/ha. The initial lethal concentrations for 50% and 90% of the population (LC₅₀ and LC₉₀) against Natular XRG were determined in the laboratory for the 1st generation progeny (F₁). Selection was applied at LC_70–90 levels to 10,000–15,000 of late 3rd and early 4th instars each generation. Susceptibility changes were determined every other generation and referenced to a susceptible laboratory colony as well as freshly collected wild populations of the same species concurrently. Tolerance to spinosad (resistance ratio <5.0 fold) was observed up to F₈ generation in the selected population. Thereafter, resistance ratios increased significantly from F₁₀ to F₁₆ generations, being 7.26- to 20.52-fold at the LC₅₀ and 7.48- to 20.08-fold at the LC₉₀ level.
