Tamias umbrinus Allen, 1890, a medium-sized chipmunk commonly called the Uinta chipmunk, is 1 of about 25 species of extant chipmunks. It is distributed in the western United States from southern Montana south to Arizona and from Colorado west to eastern California. T. umbrinus prefers montane and subalpine coniferous forest at elevations between 1,417 and 3,660 m. The species is listed as “Least Concern” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources; although the distribution is fragmented, the species is common locally and the distribution includes protected areas.
