Abstract

The social stingless bees of the genus Trigona (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Meliponini) are important floral visitors and pollinators. However, some Trigona species can cause damage when they chew the tissues of plants of agricultural importance to obtain resins and fibers, they use to build their nests. Trigona fuscipennis Friese and T. nigerrima (Cresson) are reported chewing different vegetative and reproductive parts of physic nut, Jatropha curcas L. (Euphorbiaceae), in southern Chiapas, Mexico.
