The diel activity of dung beetles is poorly understood in Australia. Understanding diel activity is fundamental to understanding the ecology and management of these insects. The diel activity is typically measured using ground-based pitfall traps, which require manual changing. Here we showcase a time sorting pitfall trap (TSPT) that allows for automated time sorted sampling of dung beetle communities to help investigate diel activity and determine abiotic triggers of diel activity. Testing was undertaken to determine the following: 1) Can the TSPT capture dung beetles at eight (3-hr interval) time points throughout a 24-hr period? 2) How efficiently can the TSPT capture dung beetles compared to a ground-based pan trap? 3) How does the height of the TSPT (standing vs. buried) affect the species diversity and abundance? We found that the TSPT successfully captured dung beetles at different time intervals, providing an assessment of beetle activity. We provide examples from two locally abundant dung beetles species, Labarrus lividus (Olivier, 1789) (Aphodiinae) and Onthophagus binodis (Thunberg, 1818) (Scarabaeinae). The height of the TSPT negatively influenced species diversity and abundance compared to ground-based pan traps. When we compared the results of pan traps and the equivalent of a buried TSPT (TSPT lid with pan trap underneath set at ground height), no difference was detected in overall species diversity, yet abundance was still reduced. When the height of the TSPT was reduced, only 20% of the abundance was captured compared to the ground pan trap. Overall, the TSPT worked for the intended purpose of measuring diel activity though it should be buried or have its height reduced to improve capture rate.

Cyclocephala ignota Ratcliffe and Seidel is described as a new species from Bolivia. A description, diagnosis for distinguishing the species, illustrations, and a distribution map are provided. The new species is morphologically bizarre compared to most other Cyclocephala Dejean, 1821 species because of its dorsoventrally depressed body shape and dense pilosity.

The rare ant-loving beetle genus Syntectodes Reitter of the tribe Tmesiphorini (Pselaphinae: Pselaphitae) contains three species distributed in Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Australia. Here, a fourth member, Syntectodes politus Yin, new species, from the Himalaya Mountains of Nepal is described and illustrated.

The aim of this study is the quantitative assessment of temporal variations in the composition and structure of a nocturnal flying beetle community in northeastern North America. In southern Québec (Canada), we collected by blacklight trapping a total of 33,382 individuals representing 625 Coleoptera species or morphospecies belonging to 63 families from a grassland at Scotstown during six years (2007–2012). Carabidae and Staphylinidae were the most abundant families and had the highest species richness. This blacklight trapping throughout the April–September period over many years provides critical information for assessments of beetle diversity in southern Québec, based on 1) the large proportion of species collected in small numbers (1–2 adults), 2) nearly 60% of species flying for only 1–3 months over six years, and 3) the large proportion of dominant/subdominant species in spite of strong year-to-year fluctuations in the relative abundance of species. Consequently, light trapping investigations in the future should be extended across many years to improve the inventory of species in a region, aid in the evaluation of the rarity of some Nearctic species, and study long-term effects of certain environmental factors (e.g., anthropogenic disturbance, climatic changes). We also studied the seasonal flight pattern for the 57 most abundant species (at least 100 individuals) including two eudominant species, Bembidion versicolor (LeConte) (Carabidae) (7.5% of the total catches) and Ectopria nervosa (Melsheimer) (Psephenidae) (6.8%); the flight peak of many species was during mid-summer. We determined the sex ratio for 23 abundant species; 12 species presented a female-biased sex ratio.

We describe a distinctive new genus of Lophocateridae, Melyronyxa Gimmel and Leschen, new genus, based on two species from Australia, Melyronyxa monteithi Gimmel and Leschen, new species (type species; Queensland) and Melyronyxa pubescens (Blackburn, 1891), new combination (New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria). Melyronyxa shares a number of characters with and is the putative sister genus of Peltonyxa Reitter, 1876, but may be distinguished by the elytra with irregular punctation and lacking costae and the body covered with erect, slender setae. We also provide clarifications on recently published commentary on the phylogeny and classification of Lophocateridae and on the generic placement of Lophocateres pilosus Olliff, 1883.

Colacus cuchimilco Figueroa and Ratcliffe is described as a new species from the Puerto Viejo wetland in the Lima Department of Peru. A description, a diagnosis separating it from similar species, illustrations, and a distribution map are provided.

The phylogenetic relationships and generic classification of the Calochrominae (Lycidae) were recently revised, modifying the whole concept of the subfamily. Among these changes, the genus Adoceta Bourgeois, originally distributed in northern Africa, was proposed as a synonym of Lygistopterus Mulsant. Consequently, two North American species described in Adoceta, Adoceta apicalis Green, 1949 and Adoceta ignita Green, 1949, were transferred to Lygistopterus. In our study, we provide a morphological overview of these two species and the molecular placement of Lygistopterus ignitus within the Calochrominae. Both approaches converged, and we provide evidence that these species should be transferred to the genus Macrolygistopterus Pic, and new generic combinations are proposed: Macrolygistopterus ignitus (Green, 1949), new combination and Macrolygistopterus apicalis (Green, 1949), new combination. We also present clarifications on the status of the New World calochromines, and formally transfer the following species placed in Calochromus Guérin-Méneville to Lygistopterus: Lygistopterus perfacetus (Say, 1825), new combination, Lygistopterus fervens (LeConte, 1881), new combination, Lygistopterus dimidiatus (LeConte, 1875), new combination. A key for the genera of Calochrominae of the Americas is provided along with illustrations of the monotypic Caloptognatha beameri Green, 1954 and an updated checklist of North America north of Mexico calochromine species.

The diversity of Coccinellidae (Coleoptera) of the Tropical Dry Forest of the Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve (RBCC) in the state of Jalisco and the Sierra de Huautla Biosphere Reserve (REBIOSH) in Morelos, Mexico was analyzed using Malaise traps. Monthly sampling was carried out for one year in each study area. Fifteen individuals representing seven species were collected at the RBCC; these include Azya orbigera Mulsant, Diomus sp. 1, Diomus debilis (LeConte), Scymnobius flavifrons (Melsheimer), Zagloba beaumonti Casey, Scymnus (Pullus) dozieri Gordon, and Stethorus caseyi Gordon and Chapin. The estimated richness for the RBCC was 12 species, and the true diversity was 5.65 effective species. All of the species recorded for the RBCC represent new records for the state of Jalisco as well. For the REBIOSH, 28 specimens representing two species were collected. These included 27 individuals of Brachiacantha bistripustulata (Fabricius) and a single individual of Epilachna tredecimnotata (Latreille), both of which represent new records for the state of Morelos. The true diversity was 1.16 effective species. This work is the first to characterize the diversity of Coccinellidae in the Tropical Dry Forest of Mexico.

Se analizó la diversidad de Coccinellidae (Coleoptera) del Bosque Tropical Caducifolio de la Reserva de la Biosfera Chamela-Cuixmala (RBCC) en el estado de Jalisco y de la Reserva de la Biosfera de la Sierra de Huautla (REBIOSH) en Morelos, México, utilizando trampas Malaise. Se realizaron muestreos mensuales durante un año en cada área de estudio. En la RBCC se recolectaron 15 individuos que representaron siete especies, entre ellas Azya orbigera Mulsant, Diomus sp. 1, Diomus debilis (LeConte), Scymnobius flavifrons (Melsheimer), Zagloba beaumonti Casey, Scymnus (Pullus) dozieri Gordon y Stethorus caseyi Gordon y Chapin. La riqueza estimada para la RBCC fue de 12 especies, y la diversidad real fue de 5.65 especies efectivas. Todas las especies registradas para la RBCC representan nuevos registros para el estado de Jalisco. Para la REBIOSH se recolectaron 28 ejemplares que representan dos especies. Estas incluyeron 27 individuos de Brachiacantha bistripustulata (Fabricius) y un solo individuo de Epilachna tredecimnotata (Latreille), las cuales representan nuevos registros para el estado de Morelos. La diversidad real fue de 1.16 especies efectivas. Este trabajo es el primero en caracterizar la diversidad de Coccinellidae en el Bosque Tropical Caducifolio de México.

A species is newly recorded from Paraguay, Sylvicanthon monnei Cupello and Vaz-de-Mello, 2018, and the previously dubious record of Sylvicanthon candezei (Harold, 1869) from the country is confirmed. Agamopus viridis Boucomont, 1928, Pseudocanthon chaquensis Nazaré-Silva and Silva, 2021, and Pseudocanthon pantanensis Nazaré-Silva and Silva, 2021 are newly recorded from Paraguay, and Pseudocanthon xanthurus (Blanchard, 1846), already known from humid southern areas of the country, is newly recorded from its northern Dry Chaco. The publication date of P. xanthurus—1846, not 1843, 1845, or 1847 as previously mentioned—is clarified, and additional data on the chromatic population structure of Bolbites onitoides Harold, 1868 in Paraguay are presented.

The larva of Laccophilus yoshitomii Watanabe and Kamite, 2018 from Japan is described for the first time, with an emphasis on the chaetotaxy analysis of the cephalic capsule, head appendages, legs, last abdominal segment, and urogomphi. The larva of L. yoshitomii is characterized as follows: setae MX5 and MX6 curved posteriorly, seta FE5 longer than FE6, setae TI1 and TI7 approximately the same length, seta AB11 longer than AB15, setae UR2–4, 7 long (instar I), and each posterolateral margin of PA with 2 secondary setae (instar II–III). Wild individuals tend to be darker than reared individuals, probably owing to the lightness and color of the surrounding environment.

Falsoceratoprion pecki Ferreira and Ivie, new species from Cuba, is the first extant and second species of the genus Falsoceratoprion Ferreira, 2022. The new species is diagnosed, described, illustrated, and compared with the fossil species Falsoceratoprion fumagalliae Ferreira, 2022. A key to the West Indian Lycidae genera is provided. The record of Metapteron testaceipenne Pic, 1922 in Cuba is found to be incorrect and this species, along with the genus Metapteron Bourgeois, 1905, is removed from the West Indian fauna.

Falsoceratoprion pecki Ferreira et Ivie se describe como una nueva especie para Cuba, esta es la segunda especie perteneciente a Falsoceratoprion Ferreira, 2022 y la primera especie no extinta dentro de este género. La nueva especie se diagnostica, describe, ilustra y compara con la especie fósil Falsoceratoprion fumagalliae Ferreira, 2022. Se proporciona una clave para determinar los géneros de Lycidae de las Indias Occidentales. Se encontró como incorrecto el registro de Metapteron testaceipenne Pic, 1922 para Cuba, por lo que esta especie y el género Metapteron Bourgeois, 1905 es removido de la fauna de las Indias Occidentales.

Spodochlamys keitai Kobayashi and Ratcliffe is described as a new species from Otanche in Boyacá Department, Western Boyacá Province, in northeastern Colombia. A description, diagnosis separating it from similar species, and illustrations are provided. An identification key and a checklist of Spodochlamys Burmeister species are included.

We report the first biosecurity surveillance detections of the adventive cerambycid beetle Nathrius brevipennis (Mulsant) by the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. The detections in panel traps near the port of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia are a result of ongoing pest monitoring by the department's National Border Surveillance program. Nathrius brevipennis adults were detected at three separate trap sites over three successive summers (2019–2022), which suggests that a localized population is established. Apparently native to the western Mediterranean, N. brevipennis has been introduced to other countries via the trade of manufactured wicker work and basketry articles and is now almost cosmopolitan. The species is highly polyphagous, recorded from at least 42 genera across 22 plant families. There are earlier records of N. brevipennis from the 1920s in Melbourne and Adelaide. These were misidentified as Molorchus sp., and the source of these detections is unclear. Diagnostic characters and photographs of both sexes of N. brevipennis are presented together with an extensive review of host associations and DNA barcode data based on the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene.

Aleochara verecunda Sharp, 1876 was considered a species inquirenda in the latest revision of the Brazilian Aleochara (Aleochara) Gravenhorst, 1802 (Staphylinidae: Aleocharinae). However, recently collected specimens identified as A. verecunda are here reported from Acre and Pará, two states in the Brazilian Amazon region. The species is easily distinguished from the other Brazilian A. (Aleochara) species by the two first antennomeres (scape and pedicel), which are much lighter in color than the others.

Acropteroxys cervantesi Mora-Aguilar and Delgado, new species (Coleoptera: Erotylidae: Languriinae: Languriini) from the Pacific lowlands in the state of Guerrero, Mexico is described and illustrated. A key to the species of the genus Acropteroxys Gorham is included. New Mexican state records are given for Camptocarpus dilatipleura Martins and Pereira, Camptocarpus longicollis (Motschulsky), Crotchia parallela Fowler, Ectrapezidera semiotina (Gorham), Languria irregularis Casey, Languria mozardi Latreille, Langurites lineatus (Castelnau), and Tomolanguria aculeata (Gorham).
