Project Tiger was a collaborative effort to study entomological diversity in Thailand in 2007 through 2009 that involved the University of Kentucky, Thai field researchers, and world taxonomic specialists. Three new species of scorpionflies (Mecoptera: Panorpidae) are described from material acquired during Project Tiger and during subsequent collecting by the author. These are: Neopanorpa normpennyin. sp., a remarkable species with a greatly elongated process on the male 3^rd tergum extending caudally nearly to the genital bulb, Neopanorpa arcuatan. sp., a scorpionfly with unique arched male hypovalves, and the first species of Panorpa from Thailand, Panorpa auripennisn. sp., with unusual golden yellow wings. Collection data for Mecoptera taken by Project Tiger are presented. Efforts by Project Tiger and follow up collecting bring the number of species of Mecoptera occurring in Thailand to 17, including 15 species of Neopanorpa Weele, 1909, one Panorpa Linnaeus, 1758, and one Bittacus Latreille, 1805, and the number of Mecoptera species known from Indochina to 51, including 44 Neopanorpa, two Panorpa, four Bittacus, and one Bicaubittacus Tan & Hua, 2009.

The genus AmmoplanellusGussakovskij, 1931, is redescribed based on North American members. The two female North American Ammoplanellus holotypes, A. umatillaPate, 1945 and A. xilaPate, 1945, are reviewed and their corresponding males are newly described. Seven new North American species are described: A. leucofrons, A. maculifrons, A. montanus, A. nasalus, A. owensensis, A. schlingeri and A. utahensis. A new subgenus, Ammoplanellus (Pseudammoplanellus), is proposed for A. owensensis. Relationships between the genera Ammoplanellus, Ammoplanus Giraud, 1869, and Parammoplanus Pate, 1939, are discussed. The different nesting characteristics of Ammoplanellus relative to other Ammoplanina genera are discussed. Also highlighted are the different collecting techniques for Ammoplanellus relative to ammoplanine genera.

The final-instar larvae of Pryeria sinica Moore, 1877 (Zygaenidae) are conspicuously colored yellow-green with black stripes and are known to escape from attacks after predators learn of the cyanogenic fluids secreted on their body surface. Ivela auripes (Butler, 1877) (Lymantriidae) is often found in the same habitat during the same season as P. sinica, and its pupa (not larva) is similar to larval P. sinica in shape and color. Mature larvae of P. sinica search for pupation sites during the daytime and pupate in cryptic, pale-brown cocoons. On the other hand, I. auripes pupates without cocoons on substrates near and above the ground, where they appear to be exposed to predators. In this study, it was observed that Japanese tits, Parus minor Temminck & Schlegel, 1848, ate I. auripes pupae attached to a wall, but no tit individual ever attacked them repeatedly. When fed pupae or larvae in the laboratory, Japanese grass lizards, Takydromus tachydromoides (Schlegel, 1838), rarely ate larval P. sinica or pupal I. auripes or regurgitated them soon after eating them, suggesting their unpalatability. If discrimination of pupal I. auripes from larval P. sinica is not precise for these potential predators, their similar warning colors might constitute a rare case of Müllerian mimicry between different developmental stages of unrelated moth species.

Caprithrips melanophthalmus (Bagnall, 1927) is newly recorded in China, and the male is described for the first time. A key to males of Caprithrips known worldwide is provided. Partial mtDNA Cytochrome Oxidase c Subunit 1 (COI) gene sequence of a female is given. Gene sequences of C. melahopthalmus and morphological characters of its genus are closer to the Chirothrips genus-group than to the Anaphothrips genus-group.

The azalea lace bug, Stephanitis pyrioides Scott, 1874, is a serious pest of rhododendrons and azaleas. While it has been present in the Eastern U.S.A. since 1915, it was only detected in the Pacific Northwest in 2008–2009, where it has become a serious emerging pest. Although its biology and control methods have been examined in the eastern states, little information is available about how to manage this pest in western states. A 2.4-year survey was conducted to document its phenology at 3–8 sites in the Willamette Valley of Oregon and check for the presence of natural enemies specializing on lace bugs that are found in the East Coast. Similar to prior studies, eggs were the predominant overwintering stage in Oregon. Three generations of S. pyrioides were observed during monthly inspections of infested plants, while ∼3.5 generations were estimated by degree-day (DD) calculations based upon 11.2°C and 33°C as the lower and upper thresholds, respectively. Egg hatch was observed as early as April at 156 DD based on a 10.2°C lower threshold specific for egg development. These results suggest that early season management in March through May might target overwintered eggs to prevent hatch or target the young nymphs that emerge. Neither of the exotic natural enemies established in the East Coast, the egg parasitoid, Anagrus takeyanus Gordh, 1977, or the predatory mirid, Stethoconus japonicus Schumacher, 1917, were detected when rearing S. pyrioides from eggs or taking shake samples from infested leaves. Future biological control efforts should focus on other natural enemies.
