Scaphinotus longiceps Van Dyke, 1924 (Coleoptera: Carabidae) has formerly been recorded from only three sites (two of which are based on specimens collected in 1901 and the 1930s) in northwestern California. The limited known range, apparent restriction to old growth forests, and few specimens have caused this species to be regarded as potentially threatened or endangered. Ten additional sites have since been found, significantly increasing the known range and potential ecological amplitude of this poorly understood species. Habitus and other images are presented to aid in distinguishing this species from several related species found in the region.
