Abstract

Based on prior results showing strong population-level footedness in Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) fish-carrying behavior, we sought to investigate how much geographic variation in Osprey footedness exists. We scored 342 photographs from the Macaulay Library in which an Osprey carried a fish with 1 foot in front and the other in back. Unlike the prior study, we did not find evidence of strong footedness at a population level, and indeed were unable to reject the null hypothesis of no footedness despite a large sample. We were also unable to reject the null hypothesis that New World and Old World Ospreys exhibit similar orientation frequencies.

Con base en resultados previos mostrando una fuerte preferencia de uso de una de las dos patas en el comportamiento de cargar pescado en águila pescadora (Pandion haliaetus), buscamos investigar cuánta variación geográfica en la preferencia de uso de alguna de sus dos patas existe en águila pescadora. Calificamos 342 fotografías de Macaulay Library en las que se veía cómo un águila pescadora cargaba pescado con una pata adelante y otra atrás. Contrario a estudios anteriores, no encontramos evidencias de preferencia de uso de alguna de las dos patas a nivel poblacional, y no pudimos rechazar la hipótesis nula de no preferencia de uso de alguna de las dos patas a pesar de tener una muestra grande. Tampoco pudimos rechazar la hipótesis nula de que las águilas del Nuevo Mundo y del Viejo Mundo muestran frecuencias de orientación similares.
