This award recognizes Articles or Notes published in Waterbirds that represent a significant contribution to conservation of at-risk species or populations of waterbirds.

This year's Conservation Publication Award recipients are Flávia Ribeiro, Lívia Vanucci Lins and Flávio Henrique Guimarães Rodrigues for their paper:

Ribeiro, F., L. Vanucci Lins, and F. H. G. Rodrigues. 2018. Reproductive Ecology of the Brazilian Merganser (Mergus octosetaceus) in Serra da Canastra National Park and Adjacent Areas, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Waterbirds 41: 238-246.

This paper summarizes a long-term study (2005-16) on the breeding ecology of the Brazilian Merganser, at one of its last remaining sanctuaries in the wild - the region of the Serra da Canastra National Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The Brazilian Merganser is classified globally as a Critically Endangered species and is one of the world's rarest aquatic birds, with an estimated global population of 250 individuals. This study fills in many important information gaps in the ecology of this species and makes significant contributions to informing future monitoring and conservation efforts.
