Hormones for Control of Anopheles

Abstract

Recent accomplishments in identification of chemical structure and the availability of synthetic analogues may make mosquito control with hormones feasible. Substances with juvenile hormone activity may be applied to larvae, disrupting metamorphosis, or to adult females, disrupting development in the egg. Matrone, a pheromone from male accessory glands, can be used to sterilize females by invoking the monogamy response, hence making females refractory to insemination. These materials are not yet operational, but their promise should stimulate greater support of research in mosquito endocrinology.
