Coleorrhyncha, regarded as a suborder of Hemiptera (sensu lato), forms a phyletic lineage somewhat parallel to but nevertheless distinct from Heteroptera, both descending independently from primitive Auchenorrhyncha Cicadomorpha. Modern southern relics, Peloridiidae are the only survivors from a diverse stock of hopperlike Progonocimicoidea abundant in the Mesozoic. Cladograms of taxa of family rank of the suborder and of peloridiid genera are proposed for the first time. A latitudinal stratification of primitive and derived forms is revealed within each of 3 geographically vicarious clades of Peloridiidae; a presumed northward expansion of the family along with Nothofagus forests is discussed.
