In this overview of direct and indirect (i.e., habitat-mediated) effects of plants on predatory Heteroptera, I discuss the effects of plant characteristics on the predators’ within-plant distribution, oviposition, foraging behavior, prey-habitat location, survival, and abundance. I examine a somewhat unique feature of many predatory heteropterans, their plant-feeding habits, and show that plant feeding is important not only for sustaining predators in the absence of prey, but also for increasing the predators’ fitness when supplementing prey diets. At the plant community level, a literature review shows that, contrary to expectations, plant diversification enhanced predator populations in only 27% of the cases examined. The high level of variable response to plant diversification (67% of the cases) suggests that these predators behave opportunistically, moving in and out of habitats, perhaps switching between prey and plant food sources that become available in different habitats at different times. I also discuss how plants could be used in the following ways: (1) to enhance the activity and efficiency of naturally occurring predator populations through plant diversification, (2) to maximize the compatibility of predatory bug activity and other pest control measures, (3) to develop effective sampling protocols, (4) to increase the establishment rate of released species, (5) to mass-produce predatory bugs, and (6) to assess the potential risks associated with augmentative releases of predatory Heteroptera (e.g., damaging crops, vectoring phytopathogens). Finally, I urge a better understanding of how physiological (e.g., nutritional needs) and behavioral (e.g., switching between prey and plant feeding) traits of these predators are coupled with predator–prey population dynamics.
