The preceding collection of papers is evidence of productivity by the Western Research Coordinating Committee-66 (WRCC-66), and it is evidence of an effective response to Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko). WRCC-66 provided for organized research by scientists and agencies from state agricultural experiment stations of all affected states, and the USDA–CSREES, USDA–ARS, USDA–APHIS, Agriculture Canada, and scientists associated with international institutes (i.e., Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research, or the CGIAR system). This diverse group of scientists and agencies was exceptionally productive in view of escalating pressure for increasingly limited funds, and the essential needs of scientists and agencies for visibility. WRCC-66 can be a useful model for future responses to invading pest arthropods, a contention that we believe is supported by the collaborative associations developed through the Committee, and by the research products of Committee participants. This paper summarizes Committee results and offers suggestions on how future responses might be more effective.
