Abstract

In Sinaloa, Mexico, the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) causes economic losses during two agricultural cycles per year. The insecticidal potential and antifeedant effect of the ethanolic extracts of Swietenia humilis (Zucc), Azadirachta indica (A. Juss), and Argemone mexicana (L.), were evaluated against the third instar larvae of S. frugiperda by applying an ethanolic extract of these plants at concentrations of 5% and 10% and comparing them to water that contained Tween 80 to 01%. The larvae began dying 48 h after application. At 120 h, 10% extracts of Azadirachta indica and Swietenia humilis resulted in 80% and 73% mortality, respectively. A 10% extract of Argemone mexicana simultaneously produced 53% mortality. A larval antifeedant effect was observed from the weight of the S. frugiperda diet at the beginning, and the weight of the unconsumed diet to 120 h after exposure showed that exposure to a 10% extract of Swietenia humilis and 5% of Azadirachta indica resulted in a residual diet weight of 0.207 g and 0.204 g, respectively, compared to the control (0.177 g). The larval mortality and antifeedant effects were attributed to the presence of metabolites of the plant's extracts. These results showed the potential insecticidal and antifeedant effects of S. humilis and A. indica (10%) on the larvae of fall armyworm.
