Abstract

A pecan IPM program funded by ES-USDA was initiated in Texas in 1977 and expanded in 1980 and 1981 to reach growers in all production regions of the state. Eight pecan IPM result demonstrations were conducted in 1980, a weekly pest management newsletter was distributed to pecan growers and Extension staff with responsibilities in pecan production and protection; a pecan radio report was broadcast weekly by 68 radio stations; weekly news releases were issued to over 1200 newspaper and magazine editors; and pesticide use was effectively reduced in each demonstration orchard. In 1981, the radio and print media use continued; six new demonstration orchards were established; a pecan IPM manual was distributed for grower use; and five “Regional Pecan IPM Workshops” were held to instruct growers in the concepts and methods of IPM.
