L'existence d'une pratique de la pêche active aux cétacés durant l'Antiquité a été jusqu'à présent communément admise. Or, cette assertion repose sur une lecture erronée d'un unique passage du chant V des Halieutiques d'Oppien de Cilicie, qui a été attribué à tort à une pêche aux cétacés. En reprenant la traduction précise de ce texte et en la croisant avec les autres données textuelles, iconographiques et archéozoologiques à notre disposition, nous nous proposons de revenir sur cette interprétation, dans une démarche historiographique, critique et résolument pluridisciplinaire. Nous démontrons en particulier, en nous appuyant sur la description physique de l'animal et sur les détails techniques de la pêche livrés par Oppien, que le poète faisait plus vraisemblablement référence à un requin de grande taille. Nous revenons par ailleurs sur les apports et les limites des sources iconographiques dans ce dossier, en démontrant que les images transmises par les Anciens relevaient bien davantage de représentations imaginaires et mythiques de monstres marins que de la réalité. Enfin, une synthèse des données archéozoologiques disséminées sur les côtes atlantiques et méditerranéennes permet de démontrer que les restes de cétacés mis au jour peuvent difficilement être associés à une pratique de pêche active, et qu'il faut plus probablement les mettre en lien avec des échouages fortuits.

On the presumed practice of cetacean fishing in Antiquity. New interpretations of Book V of the Halieutica of Oppian of Cilicia by cross-referencing sources.

Until now, the existence of active whaling in Antiquity has been widely accepted. However, this assertion is based on a misinterpretation of a single passage in Book V of the Halieutica of Oppian of Cilicia, which has been wrongly attributed to whaling. By examining the precise translation of this text and cross-referencing it with the other available textual, iconographic, and archaeozoological data, we propose to reconsider this interpretation using a historiographical, critical, and decidedly multidisciplinary approach. In particular, we show from the physical description of the animal and the technical details of fishing provided by Oppian that the poet more likely meant a large shark. We also address the contribution and limitations of the iconographic sources in this dossier, showing that the images handed down by the Ancients were much more imaginary and mythical representations of sea monsters than the reality. Finally, an overview of the archaeozoological data scattered along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts shows that the excavated cetacean remains can hardly be linked to active fishing practices, but are rather the result of accidental strandings.
