This paper is written to provide a new species, Gergithoides jejudoensis sp. nov., that was previously misidentified as Gergithoides carinatifronsSchumacher, 1915 from Korea. The new species is similar to G. carinatifrons and G. gibbosus, Chou & Wang but can be easily distinguished from the latter by the structure of lateral sclerotized processes of aedeagus, apical process of genital styles, and other characters. The new species is described and illustrated, and a revised key to the known species of the genus is presented.
Fifteen new species are added to the genus Perubala Linnavuori from South America. The new species are P. boliviano from Bolivia; P. chotai, P. dentata, P. elongata, P. hamata, P. lobata and P. torra from Colombia; P. egeri from French Guiana; and P. diata, P. nigropennis, P. ramosi, P. reversa, P. spina, P. stenostyla and P. sulca from Peru. A key to the species of Perubala is included.
A new species of Micrurapteryx Spuler, M. tibetiensis Bai & Li, sp. n., is described based on specimens collected from Tibet, China. Photographs of adult, illustrations of genital structures and venation are provided, along with a key to the three described Chinese species.
A new species of the genus Synosis, S. jundiaiensis sp. nov. is described from Brazil and compared with S. ugaldei, the only described Neotropical species of the genus, known from Costa Rica.
A new species of the genus Leurus is described. It differs from the rest of described species of the genus in not having a large ventral lobe in the mandible. Illustrations are provided.
Biological parameters of Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) reared on an ancient wheat species (Einkorn) from England and five Iranian wheat genotypes (Azadi, Ommid, Marvdasht, Pishtaz and Moghan 2) were studied under controlled conditions at 22 ± 1°C, 65 ± 5% RH, 16:8 (L:D) h. The lowest rm value (0.261± 0.002 females/female/day) and net reproductive rate (R0) (28.747± 0.369) were recorded on Einkorn. The highest and the lowest finite rates of increase (λ) were on Moghan 2 and Einkorn, respectively. Also, the longest mean generation time (T) and doubling time (DT) with the lowest percentages of nymphal survival (79.5%) and fecundity over developmental time (35.739± 0.378 nymphs/female/day) were obtained on Einkorn. Adult longevity varied from 10.72± 0.123 days on Einkorn to 18.04± 0.212 days on Moghan 2. Therefore, our results showed that Einkorn, exerting a high level of antibiosis compared to other tested genotypes, may decrease the population density of the greenbug.
Pezothrips brunicornis sp. nov. is described and illustrated from China. This new species is similar to Ceratothripoides brunneus Bagnall in appearance, but is easily distinguished from the latter by abdominal sternite VII having only median pair of setae far from posterior margin and close to each other, forewing clavus with discal setae, and male tergite IX with median pair of setae short and stout. Pezothrips bactrianus (Pelikán) is newly recorded for fauna of China; P. frontalis (Uzel) that was previously recorded for China is deleted from the Chinese Thysanoptera checklist.
Apanteles mohandasi Sumodan & Narendran (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a specific solitary endo-parasitoid of Pammene critica Meyrick (1905) earlier known as Grapholita (Cydia) critica (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), a major pest on Cajanus cajan (L.). This study provides biological details, a brief morphological diagnosis with illustrations, and molecular characterization of the parasitoid. The taxonomic studies confirm the correct placement of A. mohandasiSumodan & Narendran 1990stat. rev. in place of Dolichogenidea mohandasi. Apanteles mohandasi is also compared with the closely allied species, A. taragamae Viereck and A. sauros Nixon, and DNA barcode data obtained for A. mohandasi and A. taragamae. The size of amplified CO1 gene was 494bp for the two species. The alignment score of 75% was obtained between the two species on pair-wise alignment by Clustal W tool using Megalign, DNASTAR Inc. for the sequences of A. mohandasi (GenBank Acc.No: JX083404) and A. taragamae (GenBank Acc.No: JX0830405) based on the sequence data using universally approved species identification marker CO1. The mean duration of A. mohandasi from egg laying to pupation, and pupation to adult emergence was 15.16 and 5.75 days respectively. The mean total duration from egg to adult emergence was 23.61±0.5 days and the adult mean longevity was 2.7 days in the laboratory. The hyperparasitoid, Elasmus anticles Walker (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) was also bred in the laboratory from field collected cocoons of A. mohandasi.
The genus Rhagoba Moore is newly recorded in China. Its type species, R. octomaculalis (Moore), is redescribed; Rhagoba obvellata sp. nov. is described as new. The differences between the two species are diagnosed, along with images of adults and illustrations of genitalia. Generic characters of Rhagoba are amended based on the present study, including descriptions of both male and female genitalia for the first time.
Circumstances leading to the establishment of Entomological News are recounted and the chronology of early editorships is traced. Three early entomologists, Drs. Skinner, Calvert and Schmieder, combined, served as editors of Entomological News for 78 years of its 100 year history.
