Fałtynowicz, W. 2022. Participation and role of German lichenologists in understanding the lichen biota of the areas currently within the borders of Poland. – Herzogia 35: 6 –21.

German naturalists initiated lichenological research in the areas lying within the Polish borders as early as in the 17th century. For over 200 years of their activity, they have published over 100 books and articles on lichens, making a significant contribution to the knowledge of the lichen biota of Poland. The results of their research, together with numerous preserved herbarium collections, constitute important documentation and comparative material, which is still used by Polish lichenologists.

Deutsche Naturforscher initiierten bereits im 17. Jahrhundert lichenologische Forschungen in Gebieten, die heute zu Polen gehören. In über 200 Jahren ihrer Tätigkeit haben sie über 100 Bücher und Artikel über Flechten veröffentlicht und damit einen wesentlichen Beitrag zum Verständnis der Flechtenbiota in Polen geleistet. Die Ergebnisse ihrer Forschungen bilden zusammen mit den zahlreichen erhaltenen Herbarsammlungen ein wichtiges Dokumentationsund Vergleichsmaterial, das von polnischen Lichenologen noch vielfach genutzt wird.

Bauer, N., Hüvös-Récsi, A., Lőkös, L. & Farkas, E. 2022. A new steppe element in the Vienna Basin, the first record of Xanthoparmelia pulvinaris (Parmeliaceae) for Austria. – Herzogia 35: 22–31.

The first observation of Xanthoparmelia pulvinaris in Austria is reported. The soil-dwelling lichen species was found in significant amounts (∼1,000 thalli) in the eastern periphery of the Vienna Basin at two locations in the Hainburg Hills. The typical habitats are basic rocky grassland patches on flat or low-slope plateau areas of dolomite hills. The occurrence of the species is significant from a biogeographical point of view, as it supports the assumption that the region belongs to the Pannonicum floristic province.

Die erste Beobachtung von Xanthoparmelia pulvinaris in Österreich wird gemeldet. Die bodenbewohnende Flechtenart wurde in signifikanter Zahl (∼1.000 Thalli) am östlichen Rand des Wiener Beckens an zwei Fundorten auf den Hundsheimer Bergen (Hundsheimer Berg, Spitzerberg) gefunden. Ihr Lebensraum sind felsige Steppenflecken auf flachen oder flach geneigten Plateaus von Dolomithügeln. Das Vorkommen der Art ist aus biogeographischer Sicht bedeutsam, da es die Annahme unterstützt, dass die Region zur Florenprovinz Pannonicum gehört.

Variation in morphology and colour of Umbilicaria subpolyphylla is illustrated and discussed, and its ecology is examined. It is reported from Sicily and Macedonia as new for Italy and Greece, respectively, and its European distribution is mapped.

Die Variabilität in Morphologie und Farbe von Umbilicaria subpolyphylla wird illustriert und diskutiert sowie die ökologischen Verhältnisse beschrieben. Die Art wird erstmals aus Italien (Sizilien) und Griechenland (Makedonien) gemeldet. Die europäische Verbreitung wird dargestellt.

Christensen, S. N. 2022. Contribution to the knowledge of the lichenized mycota of the East Aegean island Kos, Dodekanisos island group, Greece. – Herzogia 35: 41– 60.

One hundred and sixteen taxa are reported from Kos. One species, Candelariella subdeflexa, is new for Greece and 54 are new for Kos. The number of lichen species known from Kos is thus raised from 227 to 282. The distribution in the Aegean of the lichens new for Kos is briefly discussed. Contrary to what is observed for vascular plants, an Asian element among the lichens recorded from Kos is not detected. The species composition of different trees and substrata is presented, including lichens on Pinus halepensis subsp. brutia, Pistacia terebinthus and Prunus dulcis.

116 taxa werden von Kos gemeldet. Candelariella subdeflexa ist neu für Griechenland. 54 Flechten sind neu für Kos. Die von Kos bekannte Anzahl von Flechten wird von 227 auf 282 vergrössert. Die Verbreitung der Flechten der Ägäis wird kurz diskutiert. Im Gegensatz zu den Kormophyten ist ein asiatisches Element unter den Flechten von Kos nicht erkennbar. Das Vorkommen von Flechten auf verschiedenen Bäumen und Substraten wird dargestellt, darunter Flechten auf Pinus halepensis subsp. brutia, Pistacia terebinthus und Prunus dulcis.

Die im Zuge der BLAM-Exkursion 2019 im Biosphärenpark Lungau aufgefundenen Flechten und lichenicolen Pilze sowie deren Substrate werden in Form einer Liste dargestellt. Die hohe Zahl der Taxa in den neun Exkursionsgebieten – 546 Flechten und 69 lichenicole Pilze – weist auf die große Bedeutung des Lungaus als Rückzugsraum für im übrigen Europa stark gefährdete Arten hin. Als bedeutende Flechtenlokalitäten für amphibische Flechten und Verrucariaceae erwiesen sich die Lonka-Kaskade im Weißpriachtal und die Flächen im Vorfeld des Preberkessels.

Neu für Österreich sind Ephebe perspinulosa, Lempholemma cladodes, Polyblastidium japonicum agg., Pyrenopsis sanguinea, Scytinium biatorinum, Verrucaria cernaensis, V. hunsrueckensis, V. pallidomurina sowie der lichenicole Pilz Crittendenia coppinsii.

The list of lichens and lichenicolous fungi determined in the course of the 2019 BLAM excursion to the Lungau biosphere reserve is presented with their substrates. The high number of detected taxa in the nine study areas – 546 lichen taxa and 69 lichenicolous fungi – indicates the importance of the Lungau as a refuge for lichen taxa endangered elsewhere in Europe. Significant lichen localities for amphibian lichens and Verrucariaceae include the rapids of the Lonka River in the Weißpriach Valley and the forefield areas of the Preberkessel.

The following species are new to Austria: Ephebe perspinulosa, Lempholemma cladodes, Polyblastidium japonicum agg., Pyrenopsis sanguinea, Scytinium biatorinum, Verrucaria cernaensis, V. hunsrueckensis, V. pallidomurina and the lichenicolous fungus Crittendenia coppinsii.

The new lichen species Rhizocarpon ozsoyae is described from James Ross Island, located in the north-eastern Antarctic Peninsula region. The nrITS and mtSSU gene regions of the new species are studied and the phylogenetic position of the species is in the Rhizocarpon geographicum group. It differs from the other species of the group by having mostly 1-septate and smaller ascospores, and from nearly all of them by containing norstictic acid.

Die neue Flechtenart Rhizocarpon ozsoyae wird von James Ross Island in der nordöstlichen antarktischen Halbinselregion beschrieben. Die nrITS- und mtSSU-Genregionen der neuen Art wurden untersucht; die phylogenetische Position der Art liegt in der Rhizocarpon geographicum-Gruppe. Sie unterscheidet sich von den anderen Arten der Gruppe dadurch, dass sie meist 1-septierte und kleinere Ascosporen aufweist und von fast allen dadurch, dass sie Norstinsäure enthält.

We examined the thalli of members of the lichen genus Solenopsora (Leprocaulaceae) to learn more about their potential to host symptomatic lichenicolous fungi. Altogether, 600 specimens were screened, out of which 78 were infected by lichenicolous fungi. We identified eleven taxa of lichenicolous fungi – Arthonia sp., Ceratobasidium bulbillifaciens, Cladosporium sp., Didymocyrtis cladoniicola, Lichenosticta sp., Merismatium cf. peregrinum, Muellerella lichenicola, Muellerella triseptata, Sphaerellothecium griseae, Stigmidium solenopsoricola, and Zwackhiomyces solenopsorae, out of which S. griseae and S. solenopsoricola are described here new for science. The ratio infected specimens/total inspected host specimens (LF/host ratio) is 0.13 for all examined samples. The highest value of LF/host ratio was recorded for Solenopsora grisea and S. holophaea, respectively (0.35 and 0.30). The greatest diversity of lichenicolous fungi was denoted for Solenopsora candicans and S. grisea. The most frequent lichenicolous fungus on S. candicans was Muellerella lichenicola (85 % of infected host specimens) and Sphaerellothecium griseae (23 % of infected host specimens) on S. grisea. Morphological features and taxonomical remarks on the examined specimens are given.

Wir untersuchten die Thalli von Arten der Flechtengattung Solenopsora (Leprocaulaceae), um mehr über ihr Potenzial als Wirte symptomatischer flechtenbewohnender Pilze zu erfahren. Insgesamt wurden 600 Proben betrachtet, von denen 78 mit flechtenbewohnenden Pilzen infiziert waren. Wir stellten elf Taxa flechtenbewohnender Pilze fest – Arthonia sp., Ceratobasidium bulbillifaciens, Cladosporium sp., Didymocyrtis cladoniicola, Lichenosticta sp., Merismatium cf. peregrinum, Muellerella lichenicola, Muellerella triseptata, Sphaerellothecium griseae, Stigmidium solenopsoricola und Zwackhiomyces solenopsorae, von denen S. griseae und S. solenopsoricola hier als neue Arten beschrieben werden. Das Verhältnis infizierter Proben zur Gesamtprobenmenge (LF/host ratio) beträgt 0,13 für alle betrachteten Proben. Der höchste Wert der LF/host ratio wurde für Solenopsora grisea und S. holophaea gefunden (0,35 bzw. 0,30). Die höchste Diversität flechtenbewohnender Pilze zeigten Solenopsora candicans und S. grisea. Der häufigste flechtenbewohnende Pilz auf S. candicans war Muellerella lichenicola (85 % der infizierten Wirts-Proben) und Sphaerellothecium griseae auf S. grisea (23 % der infizierten Wirts-Proben). Morphologische Merkmale der untersuchten Proben werden beschrieben und taxonomische Bemerkungen gemacht.

Sclerococcum knudsenii, a lichenicolous discomycete growing on Polycauliona bolacina, is described as new to science from California. The species is characterized by aseptate ascospores, not previously known in this genus, and polyspored asci. An updated key to the eight accepted polyspored species of Sclerococcum is provided.

Sclerococcum knudsenii, ein lichenicoler Discomycet auf Polycauliona bolacina, wird aus Kalifornien als neu für die Wissenschaft beschrieben. Die Art ist charakterisiert durch unseptierte Ascosporen, wie sie aus dieser Gattung bisher nicht bekannt waren, und durch vielsporige Asci. Ein aktualisierter Schlüssel für die acht akzeptierten polysporen Sclerococcum-Arten ist beigefügt.

The new updated checklist of the liverworts and hornworts of Bulgaria includes 191 species and two subspecies. The list is based on the entire available literature and known herbarium records, concerning the hepatics and hornworts of the country. Information on the national distribution of each species is presented. The checklist is supplemented by a list of excluded taxa from the Bulgarian bryophyte flora with explanatory notes, and a list of most recent synonyms.

Die aktualisierte Liste der in Bulgarien vorkommenden Leber- und Hornmoose umfasst 191 Arten und zwei Unterarten. Die Liste basiert auf der vollständigen Auswertung der verfügbaren Literatur und der bekannten Herbarbelege von Leber- und Hornmoosen des Landes. Angaben zur jeweiligen Verbreitung der Arten innerhalb des Landes werden gegeben. Vervollständigt wird die Liste durch Angaben zu von der bulgarischen Flora ausgeschlossenen Arten mit Erklärungen und einer Liste der aktuellen Synonyme.

Jukonienė, I., Kalvaitienė, M. & Rasimavičius, M. 2022. On the distribution of some rare bryophyte species following revision of the K. Szafnagel collection. – Herzogia 35: 155 –162.

Historical published data, supported by herbarium specimens, provide valuable information concerning the occurrence of a given species in a given area and its distribution. The aim of the present study is to verify the distribution of bryophyte species for Belarus and Lithuania, which hitherto has been based mainly on data provided in “Zapiski bryologiczne” by Szafnagel (1908). Here, we present the results obtained following the revision of 15 specimens from the Szafnagel collection (WI), and confirm or refute the presence of 10 species.

The research confirmed the distribution of Catoscopium nigritum, Pelekium minutulum and Bucklandiella microcarpa. The revision did not verify the occurrence of Campylopus flexuosus, Dicranodontium asperulum, Palustriella decipiens, Pogonatum aloides, Pseudocampylium radicale, Rhynchostegium confertum and Sciuro-hypnum plumosum, since the specimens, on examination, were redetermined to be other species.

Jukonienė, I., Kalvaitienė, M. & Rasimavičius, M. 2022. Zur Verbreitung einiger seltener Moosarten basierend auf der Revision der Sammlung von K. Szafnagel. – Herzogia 35: 155 –162.

Historische publizierte Moosdaten, die durch Herbarbelege verifizierbar sind, liefern wertvolle Informationen über das Vorkommen einer bestimmten Art in einem bestimmten Gebiet und ihre Verbreitung. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Studie ist es, die Verbreitung von Moosarten für Weißrussland und Litauen zu überprüfen, die bisher hauptsächlich auf Daten in „Zapiski bryologiczne“von Szafnagel (1908) basieren. Wir präsentieren hier die Ergebnisse der Überprüfung von 15 Moosbelegen aus der Szafnagel-Sammlung (WI) und bestätigen oder widerlegen das Vorkommen von 10 Arten.

Durch die Überprüfung konnte das Vorkommen von Catoscopium nigritum, Pelekium minutulum und Bucklandiella microcarpa bestätigt werden. Die Revision konnte das Vorkommen von Campylopus flexuosus, Dicranodontium asperulum, Palustriella decipiens, Pogonatum aloides, Pseudocampylium radicale, Rhynchostegium confertum und Sciuro-hypnum plumosum nicht bestätigen, da sich die Herbarexemplare bei der Überprüfung als zu anderen Arten gehörig herausstellten.

Weckesser, M. & Popa, F. 2022. Micarea pycnidiophora (Pilocarpaceae) im Nationalpark Schwarzwald – ein neuer Flechtenfund aus Baden-Württemberg. – Herzogia 35: 163 –173.

Bei Untersuchungen auf Monitoringflächen im Nationalpark Schwarzwald (Südwestdeutschland, Baden-Württemberg) wurde in den Jahren 2017 bis 2019 Micarea pycnidiophora mehrfach nachgewiesen. Diese Flechte war bisher aus Baden-Württemberg nicht bekannt und ist auch bundesweit sehr selten. Die Fundorte liegen überwiegend im nördlichen Teil des Nationalparks in der montanen Höhenstufe. Das Gebiet zeichnet sich durch sehr hohe Niederschläge (um 2000 mm) und kühle Jahresmitteltemperaturen (um 6 °C) aus. Micarea pycnidiophora wurde in mittelalten bis alten Mischbeständen aus Tanne, Fichte und Buche gefunden, wobei sie vor allem Tannenstämme besiedelt. Hier ist sie mit mehreren weiteren bemerkenswerten Flechten vergesellschaftet, die charakteristisch sind für dauerhaft luftfeuchte, kühle Standorte (Thelotrema lepadinum, Arthonia leucopellaea, Micarea cinerea, Sphaerophorus globosus). Die acht Untersuchungsflächen, in denen Micarea pycnidiophora auftritt, weisen gegenüber vergleichbaren Flächen im Nationalpark eine signifikant höhere Anzahl an Epiphyten auf. Abschließend werden die Befunde aus dem Schwarzwald mit anderen Nachweisen aus Europa verglichen und die Rolle der Art als möglicher Zeiger für historisch alte Wälder und in Bezug auf den Klimawandel diskutiert.

Weckesser, M. & Popa, F. 2022. Micarea pycnidiophora (Pilocarpaceae) in the Black Forest National Park – a new lichen record from Baden-Württemberg. – Herzogia 35: 163 –173.

During surveys of monitoring plots in the Black Forest National Park (Baden-Württemberg, Southwest Germany) in 2017 to 2019, Micarea pycnidiophora was recorded several times. This lichen has not been known previously from Baden-Württemberg and is also very rare throughout Germany. Most of the localities lie in the northern part of the national park in the montane belt. The area is characterised by very high precipitation (around 2000 mm annually) and cool annual mean temperatures (around 6 °C). Micarea pycnidiophora has been found in middle-aged to old mixed forests of silver fir, Norway spruce and European beech, where it mainly colonised fir trunks. Here it is associated with several other notable lichens that are characteristic of permanently humid, cool locations (Thelotrema lepadinum, Arthonia leucopellaea, Micarea cinerea, Sphaerophorus globosus). The eight survey plots in which Micarea pycnidiophora occurs show a significantly higher number of epiphytes than comparable plots in the national park. Finally, the findings from the Black Forest are compared with other records from Europe and the role of the species as a potential ancient woodland indicator and its status in relationship to climate change is discussed.

Varicellaria velata in its current circumscription has a worldwide distribution and is common in tropical and subtropical habitats but also extends into the temperate zone. In Europe it has a subatlantic distribution and has also been recorded from a single locality in Austria for the Alps. This record has recently been interpreted as dubious and consequently, the species was not listed in recent checklists of the Alps and Austria. We here report a new collection of this species from Austria and confirm the identity of the previous record of Varicellaria velata confirming its presence in the Alps.

Varicellaria velata hat eine weltweite Verbreitung und ist häufig in tropischen und subtropischen Gebieten, dringt aber auch in temperierte Zonen vor. In Europa hat die Art eine subatlantische Verbreitung und wurde auch aus den Alpen mit einer Aufsammlung aus Österreich nachgewiesen. Dieser Nachweis ist kürzlich angezweifelt worden und die Art ist dementprechend in neueren Checklists der Alpen und Österreichs nicht aufgelistet. Hier berichten wir von einer neuen Aufsammlung der Art in Österreich und bestätigen die Identität der älteren Angabe der Art und somit ihr Vorkommen in den Alpen.

Müller, F., Biedermann, S. & Baumann, M. 2022. Neue und bemerkenswerte Moosfunde aus Sachsen und zweiter Nachweis von Fossombronia fimbriata für Deutschland. – Herzogia 35: 177–185.

Für Fossombronia fimbriata wird der zweite Nachweis für Deutschland von einem Fundort am Fichtelberg im Erzgebirge gemeldet. Aloina obliquifolia, Cephaloziella integerrima, Entodon schleicheri, Syntrichia subpapillosissima und Tortula canescens werden erstmals aus Sachsen angegeben. Für die in Sachsen in der letzten Roten Liste als erloschen oder verschollen eingestuften Arten Calypogeia suecica, Fuscocephaloziopsis pleniceps, Didymodon acutus, Grimmia decipiens, Neckera pennata und Weissia condensa konnten aktuelle Nachweise ermittelt werden.

Neue Fundorte werden für die in Sachsen erst kürzlich neu nachgewiesenen Epiphyten Lewinskya acuminata, Plenogemma phyllantha und Ulota drummondii mitgeteilt. Auf eine eigentümliche infraspezifische Sippe von Metzgeria furcata mit stark behaarter Thallusunterseite wird aufmerksam gemacht (var. flexipilis).

For Fossombronia fimbriata, the second record for Germany is reported from a locality on the mountain Fichtelberg in the Ore Mountains. Aloina obliquifolia, Cephaloziella integerrima, Entodon schleicheri, Syntrichia subpapillosissima and Tortula canescens are reported for the first time from Saxony. Recent records could be found for the species Calypogeia suecica, Fuscocephaloziopsis pleniceps, Didymodon acutus, Grimmia decipiens, Neckera pennata and Weissia condensa, which were classified as extinct in Saxony in the last Red List.

New localities are reported for the epiphytes Lewinskya acuminata, Plenogemma phyllantha and Ulota drummondii, which were only recently recorded as new for Saxony. Attention is drawn to a peculiar infraspecific taxon of Metzgeria furcata with a very hairy underside of the thallus (var. flexipilis).

The eastern Himalayas are a hot spot of global biodiversity mainly because of their unique geographical location, complex landform and diverse ecological environment that provide a vast living space for plants with different ecological needs. During a short excursion in Tibet in Southwestern China, Ozobryum ogalalense, a species previously only known from several scattered areas in North America, was discovered and its range thereby extended to Asia (China). Brief morphological descriptions, distributional remarks and photographs of O. ogalalense based on the Chinese specimen are provided. The dramatic disjunction of moss species is briefly discussed.

Der östliche Himalaya ist ein Hotspot der globalen Biodiversität, vor allem wegen seiner einzigartigen geografischen Lage, der komplexen Landschaftsform und der vielfältigen ökologischen Bedingungen, die einen ausgedehnten Lebensraum für Pflanzen mit unterschiedlichen ökologischen Bedürfnissen bieten. Bei einer kurzen Exkursion in Tibet im Südwesten Chinas wurde Ozobryum ogalalense, eine bisher nur von mehreren verstreut liegenden Gebieten Nordamerikas bekannte Art, entdeckt und ihr Verbreitungsgebiet damit auf Asien (China) ausgedehnt. Es werden eine kurze morphologische Beschreibung, Hinweise zur Verbreitung und Fotografien von O. ogalalense basierend auf dem chinesischen Material gegeben. Die starke Disjunktion von Moosarten wird kurz diskutiert.
