Leafhopper species assigned to Ballana DeLong and Gloridonus Ball include nearly 15% of all endemic leafhoppers reported from arid regions of the southwestern USA and 29% of the leafhoppers considered to be endemic to California. Ballana is revised and subsumed within Gloridonus, the whole comprising 83 valid species: 10 belonging to the nominate subgenus Gloridonus, 56 restricted to the subgenus Ballana stat.nov. including 1 subspecies (B. brevidens curta DeLong) raised to species rank, leaving 15 species in the subgenus Laterana and 2 species in Gloridellus subg. nov. There are 42 new synonymies from among DeLong's species of Ballana described in 1937 and 1964 (quira  =  B. adversa DeLong, 1937; volsella  =  B. apta DeLong, 1964; letura, insula  =  B. angula DeLong, 1937; diversa, omani, paridens  =  B. arma DeLong, 1937; fatuita  = Thamnotettix atridorsum Van Duzee, 1894; tiaja  =  B. calcea DeLong, 1937; bicornis, profusa  = B. calipera DeLong, 1937; coarcta  =  B. callida DeLong, 1937; rara  =  Ballana [brevidens] curta DeLong, 1964; firma  =  B. delea DeLong, 1937; aleta  =  T. dissimilata Ball, 1910; clara  =  B. dola DeLong, 1964; mira  =  B. effusa DeLong, 1964; attenuata  =  B. filamenta DeLong, 1937; remissa  =  B. hebea DeLong, 1937; simplex, telora  =  B. indens DeLong, 1937; delta  =  B. nigridens DeLong, 1937; aperta, calcara  =  B. occidentalis DeLong, 1937; curvidens, orleta  =  B. polica DeLong, 1937; datuna  =  B. recurvata DeLong, 1937; mana  =  B. seca DeLong, 1937; sera  =  B. mera DeLong, 1937; parallela  =  B. spinosa DeLong, 1937; dira, extrana, repa  =  T. titusi Ball, 1910<

Six different commercial liquid pyrethroid termiticide formulations commonly used in building construction termite control applications to fill materials were individually applied at label rates to the horizontal surface and within perimeter and utility pipe trenches of ‘aggregate base course’ (ABC) gravel fill commonly used for building foundation construction in Arizona. Three termiticides contained finely powdered cellulose additive and three did not. Cellulose-augmented termiticides were retained in significantly greater concentrations in uppermost ABC partitions compared with their counterpart non-cellulose termiticides that contain the same active ingredient. Residues decreased with increasing depth. Cellulose-augmented permethrin applied to the surface of loamy soil from Mississippi and sandy soil from Florida also resulted in decreasing active ingredient concentrations with depth. Additionally, ABC perimeter trenches and trenches around upright utility pipes penetrating through the fill received by-the-label termiticide applications, resulting in relatively greater variability of vertical dispersion compared with vertical filtering effects associated with surface applications.

Staphylinidae is one of the most diverse groups of animals, with more than 58,000 described species placed in one extinct and 32 extant subfamilies. Jurassic rove beetles are mainly reported from the Late Jurassic of Karatau, Kazakhstan. Here we report an unusual rove beetle, Mesapatetica aenigmatica n. gen. n. sp., from the Middle Jurassic (ca. 165 Ma) of China. The new species displays an enigmatic combination of features belonging to the two basal subfamilies Apateticinae (e.g., clubbed antennae, keeled tibiae, and well-margined pronotum) and Trigonurinae (e.g., presence of epistomal suture, more or less reduced antennomere 8, relatively long elytra covering abdominal tergite III, and body shape). It also has several peculiar features lacking in those subfamilies: contiguous mesocoxae, and abdominal tergites IV and V each with a pair of basolateral ridges. The discovery of this enigmatic genus from the Middle Jurassic reinforces the hypothesis that Apateticinae and Trigonurinae are sister taxa and together form one of the earliest lineages of Staphylinidae.

Several species of bumble bees are declining in the United States; these declining populations often show higher prevalence of Nosema bombi, a microsporidian pathogen. To date, surveys of bumble bee pathogens in the United States have only been conducted on workers and males, yet the health of a population is ultimately dependent on the success of colony-founding queens. We conducted a molecular-diagnostic survey of the prevalence of N. bombi and trypanosomatids, such as Crithidia bombi, in six species of spring queens (n  =  142) collected in 2011 and 2013 at three sites in central Kansas. Nosema bombi was found in 27% of Bombus pensylvanicus and 13% of B. auricomus but was not found in the other species sampled. Trypanosomatids were only found in B. pensylvanicus (9%) during the May 2013 sampling period. The high prevalence of N. bombi in B. pensylvanicus is consistent with other surveys for this pathogen in other castes, but the high prevalence of N. bombi in B. auricomus is a novel finding. Although the conservation status of B. auricomus has not been thoroughly assessed, two recently published surveys showed that B. auricomus were less common in portions of the species' range. Based on those findings and an oft-cited link between N. bombi prevalence and bumble bee species' decline (e.g., B. pensylvanicus) in other studies, our findings suggest B. auricomus populations in Kansas may warrant further scrutiny.

Two new species of the genus Ampulicomorpha Ashmead from Indonesia and Madagascar are described: A. dayi, new species, from Indonesia, Seram Island, and A. irwini, new species, from Madagascar, Antananarivo Province. Keys to Ampulicomorpha females known in the Afrotropical, Oriental and Australian regions are modified to include the new species.

Twenty-four species of Apoidea representing 17 species of apoid wasps (Sphecidae and Crabronidae) and seven species of bees (Apidae and Halictidae) are recorded from Little Tobago Island, West Indies.
