This work involves establishing the genera Coadnatus Opitz, new genus, Furcadia Opitz, new genus, and Latupusillus Opitz, new genus, and describing new species in the previously established genera Funicula Opitz and Romanaeclerus Winkler. Eight species are described: Coadnatus sakaii Opitz, new species, Funicula albocapilla Opitz, new species, Furcadia sandala Opitz, new species, Latupusillus laculatus Opitz, new species, Romanaeclerus dimidius Opitz, new species, Romanaeclerus gerstmeieri Opitz, new species, Romanaeclerus quadratus Opitz, new species, and Romanaeclerus vitellinus Opitz, new species. The concepts underlying the establishment of the genus category are discussed. Neorthopleurinae Opitz is synonymized with Orthopleurinae Böving and Craighead.

A comienzos de diciembre de 2015, un equipo internacional de cientıacute;ficos realizó un estudio de la biodiversidad al interior de la Reserva de la Biósfera Sierra La Laguna en la Región del Cabo de Baja California Sur, México. En este artıacute;culo, se documenta la biodiversidad hallada en la reserva. Se recollectó Chrysobothris knulli Nelson y por primera vez se informa sobre esta especie en la penıacute;nsula. Se documenta la planta huésped adulta como Vachellia farnesiana (L.) Wight & Arnott (Fabaceae). Se aportan registros de distribución adicionales para Baja California Sur. Podrıacute;a tratarse de una especie introducida. La gama de tallas de los individuos recolectados en la reserva concuerda con la de la serie tipo.

Eubria mesoamericana Barr and Shepard, new species, is described from Panama and Costa Rica, accompanied by images of the adult and larva and illustrations of the male genitalia. Habitat information is provided for the specimens collected by the authors. The discovery of a new species of Eubria Latreille in the Neotropics reveals a surprising geographic disjunction from its only congener in the Palearctic, Eubria palustris (Germar). Placement of the new species in the genus Eubria is supported by adult and larval morphological characters.

Camptocerus lucwildi Smith and Cognato, new species is described from montane forests of the western slope of the Andes in Los Ríos Province, Ecuador. The species is similar in morphology to Camptocerus quadridens Blackman, except that the male has one acute spine on the base of each elytron. This species represents one of the few species of Camptocerus Dejean known from the Tumbes-Chocó-Magdalena forest.

The spumarius species-group of Nearctic PachybrachisChevrolat, 1836 is defined and revised. The group is composed of one species: Pachybrachis spumariusSuffrian, 1852. A male specimen of P. spumarius, recently discovered in the Natural History Museum in London among some previously unrecognized type material of Suffrian, is herein designated as a lectotype. The synonymy of Pachybrachis roborisFall, 1915 with P. spumarius is confirmed, and Pachybrachis obfuscatusFall, 1915 is synonymized under P. spumarius, new synonymy. A description, figures, and range map are presented.

The water scavenger beetle Hydrochara rickseckeri (Horn) is a large but rarely collected aquatic beetle known from central California. Infrequent collection and a narrow geographic distribution have led the species to be considered of conservation concern by both federal and state agencies. We recently encountered this species in a vernal pond near Sacramento in May 2016, the first time it is known to have been collected in more than 40 years. This record also expands the known range of the taxon firmly into the Central Valley. We sequenced three genes from one of the newly collected specimens to place it in an existing molecular phylogeny of the genus Hydrochara Berthold. In contradiction to prior hypotheses, we find that H. rickseckeri is not evolutionarily isolated, but closely related to other North American members of the genus. We present an updated list of known specimens as well as distributional and biological information on this species. We conclude that while known information at this time would be congruent with a conservation categorization of “imperiled” (G2/S2) or “critically imperiled” (G1/S1), more targeted collecting effort is necessary to substantiate its status.

Pseudactium credoi Owens and Carlton, new species, is described from three male specimens collected at a blacklight in Wilson County, Tennessee. Pseudactium credoi is similar to Pseudactium parabolicum (Brendel) and Pseudactium ursum Carlton in the form of the ventral projections of ventrite III, but secondary sexual modifications on the legs and the form of the aedeagus differ in ways that are consistent with species boundaries among other pselaphine taxa. A modified key to the species of Pseudactium Casey is provided to allow for the separation of P. credoi from the other twelve described species in the genus. This is the third species of Pseudactium described since the last revision of the genus.

Aquatic coleopteran collections, and literature and museum reviews, have resulted in documented records from Iowa for 211 species in 10 families. Forty species are new state records.

This study determined the life cycle parameters and predation potential of Selenophorus seriatoporus Putzeys (Coleoptera: Carabidae) on different substrates to examine its suitability for biological control. The mean developmental period of S. seriatoporus ranged from 43.0 to 52.2 days at 26 ± 1°C. On soil, this carabid showed faster development, lower mortality, and greater longevity. Development was slower on vermiculite and paper; however, these substrates were suitable for developing eggs and first and second instars. Selenophorus seriatoporus completed its life cycle by preying on larvae of Tenebrio molitor Linnaeus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), and adults showed higher preference for T. molitor larvae than for pupae. Third instars and adults of S. seriatoporus demonstrated high predation potential, showing their suitability as biological control agents.

A review of the literature revealed 17 subfamilies and 355 species of rove beetles (Staphylinidae) reported from South Carolina. Updated nomenclature and references are provided for all species. The goal of this list is to set a baseline for improvement of our knowledge of the state's staphylinid fauna, as well as to goad ourselves and others into creating new, or updating existing, regional faunal lists of the world's most speciose beetle family.

Podolasia diabla Smith and Paulsen, new species and Podolasia parapilosa Smith and Paulsen, new species (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae: Podolasiini) are described from dune habitats in Coahuila, Mexico. The new species are illustrated, and diagnostic characters are discussed to separate them from previously described species. Podolasia diabla is notable as the first species known from this tribe with head horns.

Thomas Broun, the prolific New Zealand Coleopterist, described four species in the genus Abraeus Leach (Histeridae), two of which were placed in the genus Tribalus Erichson (Tribalus phylloides (Broun) is a junior synonym of Tribalus brouni (Broun), new synonymy), including one that is transferred to Parepierus Bickhardt (Parepierus brunneus (Broun), new combination). The fourth species, Abraeus vividulus Broun, was scored for 37 characters into a previously published data matrix, which demonstrated that a new genus-level status is required to accommodate the species. Brounhister Leschen and Oˆ hara, new genus is named and the type species, Brounhister vividulus (Broun), new combination, is redescribed and placed in Abraeinae incertae sedis. A key to the New Zealand histerid genera is presented. Comments on histerid characters and the New Zealand fauna are included.

Aggregations during diapause are common among terrestrial arthropod species. They are usually considered as a defense strategy or a way to resist unfavorable abiotic conditions. However, systematic studies on the abiotic conditions as close as possible to the arthropods in their aggregation sites (= microsites) and individual survival in the aggregations are lacking. We studied whether or not aggregation sites of the lady beetle Hippodamia undecimnotata (Schneider) provide suitable abiotic conditions for its survival. We recorded hourly temperature and relative humidity throughout the overwintering aggregation period in three overwintering microsites and investigated if they 1) favor lady beetle survival and 2) prevent the proliferation of ectoparasitic fungi, a lethal threat for lady beetles. We found that overwintering microsites did not offer direct suitable conditions in terms of temperature for lady beetle survival and/or presented relative humidity and temperature conditions favorable to ectoparasitic fungi and therefore indirectly affected lady beetle survival.

While reviewing the literature, we discovered problems and confusion with three species of North American Lucanidae that require clarification and correction. The name Platycerus quercus (Weber, 1801) (Lucaninae: Platycerini) (formerly Platycerus virescens (Fabricius, 1775)) is revalidated since the Fabricius name is correctly classified as Temnochila virescens (Fabricius, 1775) (Coleoptera: Trogossitidae). Since there was much confusion over the classification of the name Temnochila virescens (Fabricius, 1775), a neotype is designated for this species. We use a reversal of precedence under Article 23.9.2 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature to give Lucanus piceusWeber, 1801 nomen protectum (now Ceruchus piceus (Weber, 1801), Syndesinae) precedence over the primary homonym Lucanus piceusBonsdorff, 1785nomen oblitum (now a junior synonym of Ceruchus chrysomelinus (Hochenwarth, 1785)). To clarify the author and date of Lucanus capreolus (Linnaeus, 1763) (Lucaninae: Lucanini), we detail the origin of the name. An updated checklist of the Lucanidae of North America north of Mexico is provided.

The Caatinga is a semiarid ecosystem that undergoes continual environmental disturbances through outdated production technologies and deregulated use of its natural landscapes. Bioindicators, such as dung beetles, are successfully used to understand processes of forest disturbance and subsequent regeneration. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the dung beetle assemblage of a region of the Caatinga with fragments at initial, intermediate, and late stages of regeneration. Sampling was conducted in forest remnants of northeastern Brazil between 2011 and 2013 during the dry and rainy seasons, using traps baited with dung and carrion. There were no differences in beetle richness and abundance according to stage of regeneration. However, there was higher abundance in carrion traps and during the rainy season, which also presented higher richness compared to the dry season. There was a difference in species composition among the fragments in late regeneration. Deltochilum irroratum (Laporte) and Canthon aff. simulans Martínez occurred predominantly in fragments with late regeneration. The harsh conditions and scarcity of resources in Caatinga during the dry season seem to be important factors that limit the activity of these beetles. As this ecosystem has high evapotranspiration rates, carrion, which is less ephemeral than dung, could be an important resource for the beetles, justifying the higher abundance attracted to this resource. Our results suggest that D. irroratum and C. aff. simulans have a strict distribution in conserved habitats and could be evaluated as indicator species of this ecosystem in future studies.

The first collection of Cimberis attelaboides (Fabricius, 1787) at Honghuaerji, Inner Mongolia, northeast China, represents a new country record for the family Nemonychidae, increasing the number of recorded Chinese weevil families from 10 to 11. Cimberis attelaboides is redescribed and illustrated. It is associated with Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris L., and has a very narrow distribution in northeastern China.

The fauna of Iranian Histeridae (Coleoptera: Histeroidea) is summarized. In total, 127 species and subspecies from 37 genera and six subfamilies are reported from Iran: Abraeinae (eight species, four genera), Dendrophilinae (nine species, seven genera), Haeteriinae (three species, two genera), Histerinae (34 species, nine genera), Saprininae (71 species, 13 genera), and Tribalinae (two species, two genera). New country records are reported for Dendrophilus (Dendrophilus) punctatus championi Lewis, 1886 and Margarinotus (Paralister) carbonarius carbonarius (Hoffmann, 1803).

The fauna of Iranian Dermestidae (Coleoptera: Bostrichoidea) is summarized in this paper. In total, 123 species in 12 genera and four subfamilies (Attageninae, Dermestinae, Megatominae, Thorictinae) are listed in the fauna of Iran. Dermestes (Dermestes) haemorrhoidalis Küster, 1852 is a new country record for Iran.

Larvae and adults of Ancyronyx variegatus (Germar, 1824) were collected monthly from Elk Creek, Erie County, Pennsylvania, USA. Ancyronyx variegatus has a univoltine life cycle with six instars. Primary recruitment months were April, May, and June, and adults were present throughout the year. The annual secondary production of A. variegata in Elk Creek was 0.55784 g/m²/yr. The mean standing stock biomass was 0.14296 g/m², and the cohort production/biomass ratio was 3.902. The estimate of secondary production is important because it combines individual growth and population survivorship into a single measurement, which leads to a better understanding of the ecological importance of A. variegatus in the wood-dwelling aquatic insect community.
